The Best Instagram-Worthy Photo Spots in Cartagena, Colombia
Cartagena, Colombia is easily one of the most colorful cities I have ever visited. Cartagena’s walled city is picturesque with colorful houses, ocean views, and vibrant murals. This city is the perfect place for anyone who loves photography, as you’ll find beautiful photo opportunities at every turn. From hidden gems to iconic landmarks, here are a few Instagram-worthy spots you won’t want to miss—though there are plenty more to discover by wandering the lively streets.
Photo tip: Cartagena can get very hot during the day, so it’s best to wake up early and take your photos in the morning when the lighting is softer and the temperatures are more bearable. While you’re out exploring, don’t miss the chance to capture a photo with the Palenqueras, or Fruit Ladies. These women, often seen with colorful baskets of fruit balanced on their heads, are an iconic symbol of Cartagena’s history and culture.
San Diego Neighborhood
The San Diego neighborhood is one of Cartagena’s most charming areas, filled with colorful houses and colonial architecture. Take a stroll through this peaceful neighborhood, and you’ll find plenty of picturesque corners that are begging to be photographed. From the vibrant bougainvillea that drape over the balconies to the pastel-colored houses every inch of San Diego offers a new photo opportunity.
Carrera 8 / Calle de la Cochera del Hobo
This street is one of my favorite photos spots in this neighborhood. The vibrant, colorful houses here, paired with beautiful bougainvillea cascading from balconies, create an ideal backdrop for photographs. Here you can find the beautiful pink and yellow wall pictured above.
Corner of Calle del Santismo and Carrera 8
This iconic spot features a striking yellow building that is one one of the most photographed locations in San Diego. However, because it’s such a popular spot, keep in mind that you may need to wait your turn to get the perfect shot.
Carrera 9
Carerra 9 is another stunning street to capture the colorful charm of San Diego. Look out for a delightful red house adorned with turquoise windows, near the Hotel Kartaxa. This street has many colorful houses, with green vines and purple flowers hanging from above. The lush greenery and pops of color make it an irresistible photo opportunity.
Carrera 10 / Calle San Pedro Martir
This area of San Diego was a bit more quiet when we were there in the late morning. Here you can find beautiful murals and colorful street decorations hanging overhead, making it a great place to capture Cartagena’s vibrant spirit.
El Centro
El Centro is one of the most vibrant and popular areas of Cartagena’s Walled City, and it’s where you’ll likely find yourself spending a lot of time. This area can get pretty busy, but don’t worry—there are plenty of photo-worthy spots that you won’t want to miss.
Calle del Candilejo
One of the most unique streets to photograph in El Centro is the charming Calle del Candilejo. The architecture here is captivating, with its beautiful colonial facades and the gentle curve of the street, which creates an interesting visual perspective.
Calle de las Damas / Calle 32
I like this street because it’s located a little bit away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of El Centro. This street features some gorgeous houses, including a striking purple doorway with flowers cascading from the balcony. There’s also a gorgeous pastel green wall that adds the perfect pop of color.
Palacio de la Proclamación
The Palacio de la Proclamación is not only an important historical landmark, but it’s also one of the most photogenic places in El Centro. This colonial-era building, where Colombia’s independence was declared, is a stunning backdrop for any photo. But what really makes it special are the street performers and dance troupes that often perform right in front of the palace.
Santa Catalina Cathedral
You can’t miss the Santa Catalina Cathedral—it’s one of the most iconic landmarks in Cartagena. This stunning cathedral, with its bright yellow façade and towering dome, is an absolute must-see. It sits in the heart of the Walled City and is a perfect example of Cartagena’s colonial architecture.
To get that classic, postcard-perfect shot of the Cartagena Cathedral, head to Calle Don Soncho, just near Abaco Libros Y Café. However, Calle Don Soncho can be quite busy, so to avoid having cars in your photo and to get the best lighting, I recommend heading there early in the morning.
Getsemaní
Getsemaní is one of Cartagena’s most vibrant neighborhoods, known for its incredible murals, colorful streets, and lively nightlife. Just a short walk from the historic center, Getsemaní is a place where you can fully immerse yourself in the city’s creative spirit. From eye-catching murals to unique art installations, there’s no shortage of photo-worthy spots in this neighborhood.

Calle de la Sierpe
One of the most iconic photo spots in Getsemaní, Calle de la Sierpe is lined with vibrant street murals and colorful flags hanging overhead. This was one my favorite photo spots in the neighborhood.
Calle de San Andrés
As one of the busiest streets in Getsemaní, Calle de San Andrés is full of life. With a “Welcome to Getsemaní” sign hanging above, food vendors lining the street, and colorful murals adorning the walls, this spot perfectly encapsulates the neighborhood’s vibrant spirit. It’s a great place to capture both the energy and the artistic flair of Getsemaní.
Calle de Magdalena
This street is famous for its colorful umbrellas that hang above the street, creating a whimsical vibe. It’s a fantastic spot to take photos, especially with the entrance to the park in the background.
Calle 28
This lively street is decked out with flags, tinsel, and beautiful floral decorations hanging overhead. At the end of the street, you’ll find the popular “I Love Getsemaní” mural, which makes for a perfect photo opportunity.
Rooftop of Hotel Movich
One of my favorite places in Cartagena has to be the rooftop of Hotel Movich. The views from here are absolutely breathtaking—whether you’re looking out over the city’s colorful rooftops or taking in the sweeping vistas of the Caribbean Sea. It’s the perfect spot to relax with a drink in hand while enjoying the stunning scenery. You can capture some amazing photos here with the contrast between the historic walled city and the modern skyline of Bocagrande.
Castillo San Felipe
No visit to Cartagena is complete without a trip to Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Perched on a hill, this impressive fortress offers both breathtaking views and a rich history that make it a fantastic spot for photos.
