Mini Guide to Visiting Marrakesh, Morocco
Marrakesh has long been a popular destination for tourists visiting Morocco, and it’s easy to see why it has such a timeless appeal. The city is full of bustling souks, Moorish architecture, gardens, and charming riads. It’s a great place to visit for a short winter holiday or as part of a longer trip to Morocco. Below you’ll find some suggestions for places to stay, things to do, and ideas for nearby excursions to make this an unforgettable trip.
Where to Stay
If you want an authentic experience while visiting Marrakesh, consider staying in a riad. Riads are traditional Moroccan houses converted to guest houses and boutique hotels, usually with a central courtyard and fountain. Staying in a riad allows you to experience local hospitality, immerse yourself in local culture, and observe beautiful Moroccan architecture up close. The inner courtyards of these riads serve as peaceful sanctuaries from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, and will be a welcome oasis during your travels. Below are some of the most popular and beautiful riads in Marrakesh. They sell out quickly, so be sure to book early if you’re planning a visit.
Riad BE
Rias BE is of the most popular accommodations in Marrakesh, thanks to its popularity on Instagram. The riad is located near Jemaa el Fna square and is around $100 a night. They have a rooftop terrace, hammam, and yoga on site. The riad also serves lunch and dinner for their guests on the rooftop terrace. If you’re looking for that picture perfect riad while visiting Marrakesh, then definitely consider staying at Riad BE.
Le Riad Yasmine
Another riad which rose to popularity on Instagram, is Riad Yasmine. It’s located in the medina, and room rates start at around 150 euros per night with a minimum booking of 2 nights. The hotel offers a beautiful central courtyard, free breakfast, and booking for tour options such as guided walking tours.
La Mamounia
La Mamounia has been named “Best Hotel in the World 2021“ for the 3rd time by Condé Nast Traveler. Check out their review of the hotel here. The hotel is located outside the Medina near the Koutoubia Mosque and room rates start at around $600 per night. It’s set on a former royal estate dating from the 12th century and is a must stay for those looking to experience a luxurious vacation in Marrakesh. There are three on-site signature restaurants, sprawling gardens, four bars, a movie theater, hammams, and tea rooms. The hotel has hosted numerous celebrities and foreign dignitaries.
Royal Mansour
The Royal Mansour hotel was built by King Mohammed VI and is the epitome of opulence and timeless beauty. This hotel is a bit of splurge, with room rates at around $2,000 a night but it’s the perfect place for those looking for an exceptionally luxurious experience. Set on a 12 acre estate, the hotel boasts 53 riads, 4 signature restaurants, large outdoor swimming pool, and an on-site spa.
Note that riads come at different price points, so there is something for every traveler! The popular riads do sell out quickly as they have limited capacity, but there always many other beautiful accommodations to choose from when visiting Marrakesh.
Things to See
Marrakesh has plenty to see for any traveler, with beautiful palaces, sprawling gardens, and stunning architecture. Get transported back time wandering the medina, the walled medieval city dating back to the Berber Empire with maze like alleyways and colorful shops. While in the medina, stop by the souks to view traditional textiles and enjoy Moroccan mint tea at one of the rooftop cafes. At night, check out Jemaa el-Fna Square for lively music, snake charmers, and street food.
Some of the major landmarks and tourist sites in Marrakesh include:
- Ben Youssef Madrasa
- Koutobia Mosque
- Bahia Palace
- Badi Palace
- Saadian Tombs
- Jardin Majorelle-Yves
If you have a few days to spend in Marrakech, I would recommend checking out one of the day trips to nearby sites to explore more of Morocco’s natural beauty and culture.
Atlas Mountains
The Atlas Mountains are about 2 hours away from Marrakesh, making it the perfect destination for a one day trip. Explore the beautiful mountain scenery, visit Berber villages to learn about Berber / Amazigh culture, and try homemade tagine. We personally booked this tour on AirBnb experiences, which combined the trip with a stop at the Agafay desert, but there are many similar options available to explore. Tours start at around $20 per person.
Ouzoud Waterfalls
These stunning waterfalls are located in the Middle Atlas Mountains, about three hours away from Marrakesh. While there, you can admire one of the tallest waterfalls in Africa, take a boat ride across the river, enjoy a scenic hike, and have lunch at a restaurant overlooking the waterfalls. Most tours start at around $20 per person.
Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride
Experience the sunrise over the desert with an early morning hot air balloon ride. Take in panoramic views of Marrakesh, the Atlas Mountains, and the surrounding desert. Afterwards, enjoy a traditional Berber breakfast. Tours start at around $190 per person.
If you are on a longer trip to Morocco, you can add in a 3-day Sahara desert tour or visit to other popular cities such as Fez, Chefchaouen, and Essaouria.
